THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBESITY AND ADOLESCENT BODY IMAGE AND SELF-ESTEEM

Obesity has a negative impact on the health and psychology of adolescents. One of the bad effects of obesity on health is the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cancer and heart disease. Psychologically, self-concept disorders, such as body image disorders and self-esteem disorders, are conditions that often appear together with obesity. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between obesity and body image and self-esteem in adolescents at SMPN 25 Pekanbaru. The research method is to use a correlation design using a crossectional study approach. This research was conducted from 1 November 2024 to 7 February 2025. The research subjects were 50 class VIII teenagers who were obese. The sampling technique used was total sampling. The instruments used in the research, body image was measured using the multidimensional body self-relation questionnaire appearance scale (MBSRQ-AS) and self-esteem was measured using the self-liking/self-competence scale revised version (SLCS-R). The research results showed that almost all teenagers experienced obesity I, 21 (42%), more than half of teenagers experienced positive body image, 29 (58%), and half of teenagers experienced low self-esteem and high self-esteem, 25 (50%). The results of statistical tests show a relationship between obesity and body image (p= 0.001) and a relationship between obesity and self-esteem (p= 0.015). In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between obesity and body image and self-esteem in adolescents at SMPN 25 Pekanbaru. Suggestions that can develop this research are by adding intervention or media as a means of education
